Something rather huge happened yesterday: the long-awaited digital version of GMT Games' Twilight Struggle arrived on Steam. I would have posted about it, but I was too busy playing Twilight Struggle.
As almost everyone is surely aware, Twilight Struggle is the classic game of Cold War politics and treachery that spent much of it's lifetime at the top of the ranking at BoardGameGeek (it's still ranked #2). GMT Games had tried to bring TS to digital many years ago, but the project stalled and eventually petered out. In 2014 they joined forces with digital board/card game gurus, Playdek to develop the game for every platform you can think of, and the fruits of that coupling are finally ready for the picking.
I've been tinkering in the beta since way back in December and the difference between then and what was released yesterday is quite amazing. The UI is improved, the AI isn't as dumb as Playdek is making it out to be (or I'm really bad at TS...I'll let you decide), and they've added music and ambient sounds, such as Cold War era audio quotes, which really make the game pop. It also has a pretty great tutorial and in-game help if you aren't already familiar with the game. I don't want to spoil too much, especially with Matt Thrower's review on the way.
Twilight Struggle is a challenging strategy game of medium complexity that presents new and different challenges with every game session. The game map is a world map of the period, whereon players move units and exert influence in attempts to gain allies and control for their superpower. The playable events in the game cover a vast array of historical happenings, from the Arab-Israeli conflicts of 1948 and 1967, to Vietnam and the U.S. peace movement, to the Cuban Missile Crisis and other such incidents that brought the world to the brink of nuclear annihilation.

If all that's not enough, they're having a 20% off launch sale as well. That means you can pick up Twilight Struggle for only $12 right now on Steam. Do it now before the price jumps up to its regular $15.
Some portions of this story (almost all of it, if you're counting) were poached from our sister site, Pocket Tactics.
